GREENUP -- Lost Creek Orchard's entry in the 2014 Hard Cider Competition placed first and was declared the 2014 Hard Cider Champion of Illinois.
The contest is an annual event sponsored by the Illinois Specialty Growers Association. Lost Creek reported that this years' entry was submitted by Trever and Dalton Grissom of Greenup, and was made from a blend of apples including Honey Crisp, Gravenstein and Gold Rush. The fresh cider entry also placed well.
Visitors to the sales area at Lost Creek will usually be waited on by Grissom sister, Tracy, who has also won the State Hard Cider Contest.
Lost Creek is a family oriented farm operation that will observe its 50th anniversary in 2015. The orchard grows more than 100 varieties of apples and 27 varieties of peaches. Their produce also includes pears, plums, cherries and many varieties of vegetables, including sweet corn, pumpkins, and squash.
The orchard also offers walking trails and pens of farm animals for observation at no charge. Lost Creek's season normally runs from mid-July to mid-December.
