MATTOON --The Fujiyama Japanese Cuisine restaurant officially opened on Wednesday at 1320 Broadway Ave. East, in the former Cody's Road House building.
Owner Benny Qiu said the new restaurant offers the same menu and hibachi show-style cooking as his Effingham location, which opened in March 2014.
Qiu said customers who order hibachi meals have the option of sitting at the grill, where they can watch the chef expertly dice their meat and vegetables as these ingredients sizzle on the grill. He said they also can dine at traditional booths and tables without the show.
Fujiyama offers a variety of hibachi meals with customers' choice of vegetables, chicken, steak, filet mignon and seafood.
"We sell a lot of seafood. We have very good quality seafood," Qiu said. The seafood options include salmon, shrimp, scallop, lobster, and jumbo soft shell crab.
The restaurant also offers more than 30 kinds of sushi, ranging from a California roll to a Fujiyama roll filled with king crab meat and avocado topped with tuna and eel on top.
Qiu said one of the most popular sushi rolls is the Snow Angel, which is filled with shrimp tempura and cream cheese and topped spicy crab and spicy eel sauce. He said fried tempura batter on top gives the Snow Angel an extra crunch.
Fujiyama's menu also includes miso soup, gyoza pan fried dumplings, and other appetizers, as well as a variety of fried rice and noodle dishes.
Qiu said several Mattoon residents had stopped by in recent weeks to see if Fujiyama was open. Qiu said many of his customers in Effingham are from the Mattoon area, so he is glad to open a location closer to them.
"We want to be a part of the community," Qiu said.
