MATTOON -- The board of directors of The First National Bank in Mattoon named John Covington as president of the bank at its Dec. 12 meeting.
The promotion for Covington was effective Jan. 1. Covington will retain the role of senior lender. Preston Smith will continue in his position as chief executive officer of the bank and chairman of the board.
Covington, a native of Mattoon, has been with the bank for four years and had served as an employee of Central National Bank of Mattoon before continuing his banking career in Ohio. He currently serves on the boards for the Mattoon Chamber of Commerce, Mattoon Area Family YMCA, and the Mattoon Golf & Country Club. He also is a member of the City of Mattoon Public Works Advisory Board.
Also at First National's December board meeting, Emily McMichaels Strader was appointed as assistant vice president of retail services. Her responsibilities include managing retail deposits, customer service and marketing. Strader, a native of Mattoon, has been with the bank for 10 years. She began her banking career as a teller and customer service representative with First National.
The First National Bank, established in 1904 in Mulberry Grove, has assets of $92 million, and provides trust and retail investment services. The bank operates from its main location at 511 Lake Land Boulevard, its Wealth Management Center at 1117 Broadway Ave. East, both in Mattoon, and its branch in Lerna. Covington and Strader will be located primarily at the main location but will consult with customers at other locations upon request.
