MATTOON -- Longtime employee Jennifer Lane has purchased the Mattoon Flower Shop and plans to relocate this business to downtown Mattoon next year.
The Mattoon resident has worked for almost 20 years at this flower shop, 505 S. 23rd St., off of west Marshall Avenue. Lane said she and her husband, Brandon, acquired the Mattoon Flower Shop name and inventory from retiring owner Cathy Bunyard on Sept. 27. Lane said she has enjoyed her time at the flower shop and wants to continue working with this business, so she took the opportunity to purchase the shop.
Lane said she plans to move Mattoon Flower Shop to a leased location, 1808 Broadway Ave., next spring to make use of the building that Keith Summers has renovated there and to be among the growing number of businesses downtown. She said the new location will be next to the renovated building that is now home to Helms Chiropractic.
"I'm excited. I think it will be a benefit for Mattoon for the flower shop to go into downtown," Lane said. She added that Bunyard has the 505 S. 23rd property up for sale.
Don and Rena Irons opened Mattoon Flower Shop in 1936 at the 505 S. 23rd location, Lane said. Bunyard, a longtime employee, purchased the shop from the couple in 2004. Lane said she started working in the Mattoon Flower Shop greenhouse for Don and Rena Irons, and later became a full-time floral arrangement designer. Lane said she has gotten to know many regular customers there over the years.
"We will always cherish our customers and we are excited to bring in new ones," Lane said. She staffs the shop alongside veteran manager Therese Miller and employee Sherie Harden.
The flower shop continues to offer live flowers, silk florals, balloons and related items for all occasions, as well as arranging and delivery services. Lane said they create wedding floral arrangements, Christmas chrysanthemums for churches and other venues, baby bouquets, high school dance corsages and boutonnieres, and more.
