PARIS -- The Sonshine and Sonbeam Puppeteers will present their 16th annual Christmas musical Sunday, Dec. 10 at 2:30 p.m. at The Presbyterian Church of Paris.
This year’s musical is entitled Meet Me at the Manger: Wise Men Still Follow Him Today, written and arranged by Celeste and David Clydesdale.
The performance focuses on children from a community church under the direction of Miss O’Riley, an employee of Herod’s Department Store. The group’s plans to sing at the store all morning before Christmas Day is thwarted by the store’s owner, Mr. Herod, who is far more interested in making money than spreading the Christmas Spirit. Following ejection from the store, the children decide to perform instead at the Christmas party at the Lighthouse Mission.
With lively and beautiful music presented by the children, including the manger scene of Mary, Joseph, the Shepherds, and the Wise Men; Miss O’Riley; the Mission’s director, Miss Ellie; and the mission’s chef, Emerald; as well as other children in the choir, everyone manages to have a good time. Will Mr. Herod finally “get into the act” and capture the Christmas Spirit?
Puppeteers and propateers present the musical with their arm-rod 18-inch and 16-inch puppets in Christmas attire and with beautifully hand-created props behind the tiered stage of royal blue curtains with the stunning logo banner of each team. Team members from the two teams range in age from first graders through senior adults.
Director Barbara Bergdolt always reminds potential audience members that adults traditionally enjoy the performance just as much as children do! She encourages people from very young to very old to “come along and tap your feet to the music and actions of the puppets.”
No tickets are required in advance for the musical, but a free-will offering will be taken. Those attending are invited to stay for light refreshments following the program, which will be complete in approximately an hour’s time. The Presbyterian Church is located at 241 W. Court St. in Paris.
