Island life

Today the Cubs' home for spring training is Mesa, Arizona, but from 1921-1951, the team actually trained on an island — rugged, beautiful Catalina Island off the coast of southern California. Then-team owner William Wrigley Jr. bought the island in 1919, two years before he purchased the team. Pictured above is Roy Smalley, left, Chicago Cubs shortstop, and Wayne Terwilliger, Cubs second baseman, during 1951 spring training.
