CHARLESTON -- Hailing from historic counties of Waterford, Cork, Donegal and Dublin, Danú is one of the leading traditional Irish ensembles today and they’re bring their St. Patrick’s Day Celebration to the Doudna Fine Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The group makes its only Illinois appearance for a one-night stop at Eastern Illinois University’s Charleston campus.
Named in honor of a goddess from Irish mythology, Danú’s standing room only concerts throughout Ireland are events featuring high-energy performances and a glorious mix of ancient Irish music and new repertoire.
“If you enjoy great Irish music you’ll want to see Danú,” said Dan Crews, programming director at the Doudna. “The concert hall is an intimate venue to see the musicianship of the band’s members.”
For over two decades, Danú’s virtuosi players on flute, tin whistle, fiddle, button accordion, bouzouki, and vocals (Irish and English), have performed around the globe and recorded seven critically acclaimed albums. Their live DVD, One Night Stand, was filmed at Vicar St. Dublin.
From fierce fiddle reels to pensive ballads, Danú takes its audiences on a musical journey to their native Ireland, offering a moving and memorable concert experience. As winners of numerous awards from the BBC and Irish Music Magazine, Danú has toured throughout Europe, the Middle East, and North America with stops at The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Symphony Space in New York City, and major concert engagements across the United Kingdom.
Tickets for Danu’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration are $16 for general admission, $13 for seniors (62+), and $7 for students and can be purchased online at www.doudnatix.com or at the Doudna Fine Arts Center Box Office. Box Office hours are Tuesday through Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Friday 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and one hour prior to the scheduled performance.
