MATTOON -- George Edward Strohl, age 93, of Mattoon passed away at 4:33 p.m. on Monday, January 1, 2018 at Heritage Health, Springfield.

Funeral services honoring his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 5, 2018 at Schilling Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Strohl officiating. Burial with Military Rites will follow at Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at the funeral home.

George was born on August 12, 1924 in Neoga the son of George Edward and Lena (Farris) Strohl. He married Rene Humphrey on January 22, 1947.

Survivors include his loving wife of 70 years, Rene Strohl of Mattoon, IL; children, Steven George (Sandy) Strohl of Bella Vista, AR, Brad “Rock” (Connie) Strohl of Mattoon, IL and Kim (Steve) Bowen of Springfield, IL; grandchildren, Michelle Moffett, Kaci Strohl, Nina Greenfield, Jennie Strohl-Gilder, Blake George Bowen, Camille Bowen, Luke George Edward Strohl and Hannah Meridith; great grandchildren, Mason Robert Rock Moffett, Braelynn Adina Greenfield and George Baylor Strohl; and brother, Donald Strohl of Indiana. George was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Nicole Hilligoss; and ten brothers and sisters.

George retired from the Big Four Railroads. He worked in construction and remodeling for many years, building the family home. George served honorably in the United States Army and defended our country in the “Battle of the Bulge.” He was a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and Eagles Club. George enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. He will be greatly missed, but fondly remembered by all those who knew and loved him.
