MATTOON -- Geradine “Jeri” Judith Wells, age 99, of Mattoon entered her heavenly home on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at Hilltop Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
A celebration of her life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, December 8, 2017 at Salisbury Church, 2350 Madison Avenue, Charleston, IL 61920 with her grandsons, Pastor Whit Lauwers and Pastor Jeff Wells officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service on Friday at the church. Schilling Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Jeri was born on September 30, 1918 in Lewistown, Montana the daughter of Vernon and Mini (Tague) Thornton. She married Donald Wells on July 3, 1936. He preceded in her death in 1979.
Survivors include her daughters, Judy Ingram of Chicago, IL, Carol (Roger) Claxon of Champaign, IL, Marsha Dawson of Charleston, IL and Jeri (Keith) Kurkel of Oklahoma City, OK; sons, Don (Donna Wells) of Bernie, MO, Steve (Kathy) Wells of Aurora, CO and Ken (Eileen) Wells of Phoenix, AZ; 25 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Bernadine Wishard of Neoga, IL, Annabelle (Dan) Spitz of Mattoon, IL and Nancy Thornton of Mattoon, IL. Jeri was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Chad Claxon; great grandson, Hudsen Lauwers; sons, David Wells and Jim Wells; brother, Bill Thornton and sister, Aileen Thornton.
Jeri possessed a deep and abiding faith and was a former member of the First Church of the Nazarene, where she served for years in many roles. The area she most enjoyed were the children, she loved kids. She had a huge heart for helping others, but will be remembered for her faith and love for her family. Jeri enjoyed flowers, working in her yard, relaxing on her porch and was an avid reader and especially enjoyed reading her Bible.
