LAGRANGE, Ga. -- Joseph Vance Pitts, Jr., 68, died Tuesday (Feb. 11, 2014) at his residence.
The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in LaGrange, Ga. Burial will be at Shadowlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. today (Feb. 13) at the funeral home. Striffler-Hamby Mortuary in LaGrange, Ga., is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born May 12, 1945, in Atlanta, Ga., the son of Joseph Vance Pitts, Sr. and Winifred Pitts Nixon. He married Jane Dunn Pitts; she survives.
Other survivors include one daughter, Leslie Suzanne Dunn of San Francisco, Calif.; one son, James Richard Dunn of LaGrange, Ga.; one adopted son, Clay Mitchell Dean, Sr. of Mattoon; one adopted daughter, Amy Pemberton of San Francisco, Calif.; one godson, Clay Mitchell Dean, Jr.; and one grandchild.
Mr. Pitts was an accomplished landscape and photo-realist painter and draughtsman. He was formerly employed as a teacher at the University of Mobile, the University of South Alabama, Mobile, The Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Fla., and the University of Mississippi. He was also a member of The Sons of Confederacy, Columbus Art Guild Society, Chattahoochee Valley Art Museum of LaGrange, Ga. and Artist in Residence, of LaGrange, Ga.
