Embarras Volunteer Conservation Day set

CHARLESTON -- The Embarras Volunteer Stewards will hold a Conservation Day at 10 a.m. Saturday at Warbler Bottoms. This is another Grand Prairie Friends property along the Embarras River. Take Bypass Road opposite the Lake Charleston entrance, turn right on CR 550 N. and continue to the parking area.

All are welcome, and no prior experience is necessary. Sturdy footwear and gloves are recommended. Tools are provided, but extra loppers and shovels are welcome.

Alpha Upsilon accepting donations for Socks for Soldiers project

MATTOON -- Since 2009, Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, a leadership and service organization, has sponsored an annual drive to collect "Socks for Soldiers" as part of the national project Hope for Heroes. Some of the socks are put in backpacks along with personal care items and are sent overseas to deployed service members. Some go to wounded veterans in hospitals and some go to veterans in Illinois.

Drop boxes have been placed in various businesses and schools around town until Nov. 11, Veterans Day, to collect new, black or white, men's or women's, tube or crew style socks. Autumn coin show planned

SPRINGFIELD -- The Central Illinois Numismatic Association's annual autumn coin show will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Northfield Center I, 3210 Northfield Drive.

The show will feature 72 dealer tables with U.S. and foreign coins, stated quarters and presidential dollars, books for collectors, ancient and modern coins, U.S. and foreign paper money, proof sets, and mint sets.

Registration open for EIU 'Holiday Hustle' 5k

CHARLESTON -- The Holiday Hustle, to be held at 9 a.m. Dec. 2 in front of Old Main in Charleston, is an annual 5k walk/run that raises money for One Stop Community Christmas in Mattoon.

The early registration deadline is Thursday, Nov. 16. The cost until this day is $20 per person.
