Effort to bring 'good choices’ message to schools

CHARLESTON -- I Sing the Body Electric of Sarah Bush Lincoln is partnering with the band Attaboy to bring a message of hope and “good choices” to students in Mattoon and Charleston schools, according to a press release.

The band will give four performances on the following dates/times: 2:20-3:15 p.m. Tuesday at Charleston Middle School; 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday evening at Wesley United Methodist Church in Charleston; 2:20-3:20 p.m. Wednesday at Mattoon Middle school; and from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lake Land College Luther Student Center Auditorium. The two evenings performances are open to the public.

Though its music, the band addresses teen issues like depression and suicide in hopes of helping students find better ways to cope. Body Electric is a Sarah Bush Lincoln program that uses the arts to communicate healthy lifestyle choices among youth.

Updegraff Memorial Blood Drive planned

ASHMORE -- In loving memory of Kyle Updegraff, the American Red Cross is hosting a blood drive from 1-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Ashmore Community Center.

Updegraff died due to complications from the HINI virus. Those who knew him best said he was a generous and caring young man always willing to help out others in need. The family hopes that others will follow his example and donate in memory of their loved one and to benefit others.

Updegraff was a grain purchaser for Total Grain Marketing and an active member of the Ashmore Masonic Lodge, Corn Belt Shrine Club, and the Coles County Farm Bureau. He died March 11, 2016.

Blood drive to be held at Eagles Club

MATTOON -- Donate blood in memory of Jeff Day from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the Eagles Club, 1917 Oak.

This event is sponsored by the Liberty Chapter of ABATE of Illinois. All donors will be entered into a drawing for one of two $50 Visa gift cards donated by Niemeyer Kubota in memory of Jeff Day of Humboldt.

ECIA Farm Equipment Club to hold quilt show

MATTOON -- The ECIA Farm Equipment Club will be sponsoring their first annual quilt show and annual mall show Friday through Sunday at the Cross County Mall in Mattoon.

The quilt show will be open for viewing from 5-8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday and from noon-3 p.m. Sunday.

Those wishing to display their quilts may deliver them from 2-7 p.m. Thursday. During the show, viewers will have the opportunity to pick a Viewer's Choice award winner who will be announced at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The winner will receive a quilter's basket full of goodies, which includes a $25 gift card from JoAnn Fabrics.

Saturday will also feature live demonstrations: Port Covers at 11 a.m.; String Quilting at 1 p.m.; Super Simple Hour Block cutting at 2 p.m.; and a Beginners Guide to Quilting at 3 p.m..
