Linking generations. Enhancing lives.

Eating together as a family is more important today than in the past because there are more competing distractions, more choices of activities outside the home, and a constant bombardment of information from modern technology. During the day most of us are out in the community mixing with all kinds of people. Our children are learning about the world from many sources, often without parental filters or input. Even when everyone is home, individuals do their own thing. Perhaps the only opportunity of the day to talk with each other is at the dinner table. Children in today’s busy world need a shared, safe space to discuss ideas within the understanding company of family, and parents need a routine time to connect with kids. While our smart phones and devices have brought us closer to the rest of humanity, it is the family meal that brings us closer to our own clan. The fabric of family is woven by shared experiences and time spent together.

In celebration of grandparents and family, AARP and your LifeSpan Center will be hosting an opportunity for grandparents and grandchildren to learn about the special relationship between generations through family mealtime. The event will be Wednesday, September 27 from 4-5pm at your LifeSpan Center. Cheri Burcham of the U of I Extension will talk about Joining the Generations Together through Family Mealtimes. Grandparents and their grandchildren are invited to listen to a brief presentation about the value of family mealtime and participate in tastings of sweet and savory dishes from family style recipes found in the soon to be released LifeSpan Cookbook: Recipes from the Heart. Children in attendance will have the opportunity to make and take their own pizzas too! To register for the event please call 639-5150 and reference the Celebrating Grandparents event. Both the grandparent and child(ren) must be registered to attend.
