Celebration set for Skinner's 80th birthday

CHARLESTON -- A celebration of Pastor Tom Skinner's 80th birthday will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at Friendship Baptist Church, 18709 Harrison St. 

Service will begin at 6 p.m. with Skinner's son-in-law Justin Grimes bringing the message. Following the service there will be cake and homemade ice cream served in the Fellowship Hall.

All are welcome to attend for the message, desserts and fellowship as they thank the Lord for the years and health God has given Skinner on his birthday and the 20 years as pastor at Friendship Baptist Church.

Monthly Prayer Vigil for Life to be held

TEUTOPOLIS -- The Effingham Deanery Monthly Prayer Vigil for Life will be held at St. Francis of Assisi in Teutopolis on Monday, the 45th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Praying the rosary will begin at 6:35 p.m., followed by mass at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join them in praying for the legal protection of unborn children.

The business meeting will follow in St.Clare Hall. Refreshments will be served while current legislation and information on local pro-life events will be discussed. Carpool information will be reviewed for the upcoming March for Life Springfield on Sunday Jan 28. Pro-life literature, books, bumper stickers, jewelry, bookmarks and much more will be available.

Charleston-Mattoon Christian Women's Club plans luncheon

CHARLESTON -- The public is invited to a luncheon held by the Charleston-Mattoon Christian Women's Club from noon-1:30 p.m. Thursday, $9 inclusive at the LifeSpan Center.

The theme is "Joy in the New Year" with speaker Lori Boruff of Aledo; a "Living Life Together" Feature; and "Read Across Mattoon" featuring Mattoon Middle School students and teachers. Reservations are essential; cancellations are necessary, no later than Monday.

Pathway Chapel opens doors in Gays

GAYS -- The Rev. Nick Brown has announced the new Pathway Chapel in Gays, 1204 N First St. Their first service was Oct. 1.

They are an Apostolic church that focuses on a relationship with Jesus rather than religious traditions. They are a non-judgmental group, and their services are “come as you are.”

Join them for worship and praise at 10:30 a.m. Sundays and Bible study at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
