Eyeglasses and cellphone donations to be taken

CHARLESTON -- Old State Road Christian Church, 13982 Old State Rd., is hosting a collection of used eyeglasses, hearing aids and cellphones 8 a.m.-4 p.m., now through Aug. 25.

St. Anthony Parish Picnic to be held

EFFINGHAM -- A local tradition for over 50 years, St. Anthony parish holds an annual picnic the second full weekend in August beginning on Saturday evening and continuing Sunday at noon after morning Mass, lasting into the evening.

The picnic is one of the parish's key fundraisers to support the operating budget of the schools. As an annual event for more than 50 years, the picnic features a traditional, family atmosphere and is an annual opportunity for St. Anthony alumni to return home and visit with family and friends.

Picnic highlights include games for all ages, live music, food and beverage tents, bingo, raffles, dinner, Bulldog Challenge 5K Run/Walk, wiffle ball tournament, and raffle grand prize -- choice of a new car or $17,500 cash. Plus over 50 additional prizes will be given away.

The Farm Hands to perform in Charleston and Shelbyville

CHARLESTON -- The multi-award-winning Farm Hands bluegrass gospel quartet from Nashville, Tenn., will be in concert at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 2206 Fourth St., and 6 p.m. Sunday at Shelby Christian Church, 200 N. Hickory in Shelbyville. Both events are free; a free-will offering will be taken.

Come early to Wesley United on Saturday for a picnic on the lawn with games, refreshments and fun. Please be sure to bring a lawn chair.

Holy Hands Puppets to perform at Friendship Baptist

CHARLESTON -- The Holy Hands Puppets will perform their show "Faith and Fun Circus" at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service at Friendship Baptist Church, 18709 East Harrison St.

Holy Hands Puppets, under the the directions of Carol and Linda Smith, have been carrying the gospel through the many characters they use to illustrate the "Love" of our Lord and Savior for the past 15 years. Their shows have been seen at many churches here locally but they have expanded their performances well beyond the local area.

The congregation of Friendship Baptist invite any and all who can come and be with us for their display of witnessing about our Lord what He has done for His children. The church invites children to attend and enjoy the laughter and fun they can have in learning about Jesus Christ.

CASEY -- Macedonia Baptist Church is holding a revival from Aug. 14-18 starting at 7 p.m. with Evangelist John McDonald and music from David Hensiek and Charlotte Norris.

Memory Loss, Dementia and Diagnosis discussion to be held

CHARLESTON -- Shannon Nosbisch of Effingham Area Alzheimer’s Awareness will be discussing the difference between normal aging and memory loss due to Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia at 2 p.m Aug. 20 at Charleston Bible Church, 2605 University Drive.

She will also discuss how to get a diagnosis, what to expect at your visit, why it is important to get a diagnosis and what to do after a diagnosis.
