Steve Blucker of Arthur and Clark Niepert of Newman will serve as board members at large.
On Jan. 19, the chapter held its annual officer installation dinner at Yoder’s Country Kitchen in Arthur.
Derek Gilbert, a 23-year member of the Barbershop Harmony Society, who joined the local group in 2011, received the Les Dawson Memorial BOTY Award as the Coles County Chorus 2012 Barbershopper of the Year.
The Barbershop Harmony Society preserves a form of music that is native to the United States and is performed in the unaccompanied style of a cappella.
The tenor sings above the melody line and there is frequent use of the “barbershop seventh” chord, as well as such stylistic devices as “swipes,” “back timing,” “echoes,” “patter,” and more.
The Coles County Barbershop Chorus was formed in 1967 and chartered in the Barbershop Harmony Society in 1970.
This local group’s 35 members live in 18 communities within a 75-mile radius of Coles County.
The group’s next public performances will be Feb. 14, as quartets from the chapter deliver “Singing Valentines,” in the Charleston and Mattoon area to raise money for area high school vocal music programs.
The Coles County Barbershop Chorus welcomes men of good character who like to sing.
This group meets at 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church, 10 Charleston Ave., in Mattoon.
