MATTOON -- The waiting room at Lake Land College’s Cosmetology Clinic buzzed with chatter about gowns, jewelry, dancing and dates as residents from Tanner Place Assisted Living in Paris got their hair and makeup done in preparation to attend their very first prom.
Eight residents of Tanner Place, an assisted living, group-home facility, recently visited the Lake Land College Cosmetology Department to get dolled up for an annual prom, sponsored by Effingham Terrace.
“For many of the girls who reside at Tanner Place, this is their first experience attending a special event like a prom and certainly the first time they’ve received such a special treatment like getting their hair and makeup done,” said Vikki Eugea, direct support person for Tanner Place. “If we could see it, their hearts are just fluttering with excitement. They feel very special today.”
According to cosmetology student Mary Gardner of Beecher City, having the opportunity to work with different populations as a student will help her professionally in the field.
“This has been a very fun day working with these ladies,” Gardner said. “Not only has it boosted my confidence because these girls are so enthusiastic about the services they are receiving here today, but because this opportunity has allowed me to experience a different perspective of who some of my potential clients may be once I graduate. It’s been a valuable learning experience.”
All services rendered at the Cosmetology Clinic were donated on behalf of the college. The Cosmetology Clinic offers a variety of services, ranging from hair treatments and makeup applications to esthetic services and nail technology. The clinic is open from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday during the spring semester and from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during the summer term.
