MATTOON -- The First Christian Church in Mattoon plans to send two groups of missionaries overseas in July.

One group will go to Duerro, Bohol, Philippines in Asia, and the other group will go to Tanzania in Africa.

The Philippines group will help construct a much-needed new church building, hold a Vacation Bible School for the local children, witness to the neighborhood around the church site, and dedicate the new church upon completion.

The Africa group will spend their time with missionaries Gary and Judy Woods, who have been working with the Maasai people to develop church planters in 17 local tribes. The group will have the opportunity to visit these church planters to encourage, speak to and share in the lives of those to whom they are ministering.

Both groups are in the process of raising funds for their travel expenses, and will be holding a large rummage sale from 4 to 7 p.m. April 11 and 7 a.m. to noon April 12 at 3213 Marion Ave. in Mattoon. The public is encouraged to attend and donate items to sell. No appliances or firearms will be accepted. Donated items for the sale are tax deductible.

To donate items, call Dolo Wishard at 217-259-8504 or Paul Weber at 217-273-6565. Pick up of donated items can be also arranged.

Monetary donations can be made at the sale or checks can be mailed to First Christian Church, 1600 Wabash Ave., Mattoon, IL 61938. The checks should be made out to the First Christian Church, with “missions” listed in the memo section.
