The Mattoon Area Family YMCA will offer a few upcoming Lifeguard Certification courses along with Lifeguard Review courses and Community CPR.

Each spring the Mattoon YMCA receives several calls from area pools and individuals looking to certify as a lifeguard. Currently Austin Birch, Aquatics Director, has scheduled upcoming certifications for the months of March, April and May.

The lifeguard certification course will offer you all the training needed to become an American Red Cross Lifeguard. Participants must be age 15 by the last day of the class, pass all pre-requisites, perform all the skills with 100 percent accuracy, and pass the written test with 80 percent accuracy. To be considered for certification, participants must attend all scheduled days of training.

Pre-requisites for this course include: swim 300 yards continually (freestyle and breaststroke with rhythmic breathing), tread water with no hands for 2 minutes, swim 20 yards, surface dive 8-11 foot water, retrieve a 10 pound brick, return swim within the 1 minute 40 second time limit.

The March course will be held March 8-11 and March 16-18 with all dates at the Mattoon YMCA except when travel is required to the Sullivan Civic Center.

The March session will meet at the following dates and times:

  • Thursday, March 8, 5-8:30 p.m.
  • Friday, March 9, 5-8:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, March 10, 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. (Travel required to Sullivan Civic Center, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.)
  • Sunday, March 11, noon - 5 p.m.
  • Friday, March 16, 5-8:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, March 17, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (Travel required to Sullivan Civic Center, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.)
  • Sunday, March 18, noon- 5 p.m. (If Needed). The participants will need to provide their own travel to the Sullivan Civic Center.

The fee for the full lifeguard course is $190 for Mattoon Y members and $215 for non-members.

The Y will also offer a lifeguard review course on March 16 and 17. This is a 13 hour review course to re-certify or cross over to become an American Red Cross Lifeguard. There will be an online portion as well, which must be completed prior to the class (this will be sent via email about one week prior to class). Participants must have been a lifeguard previously and are expected to have a basic knowledge of skills already. Participants should be 15 and be able to pass all the pre-requisites, as well as perform all the skills with 100 percent accuracy, along with pass the written tests with 80 percent accuracy. On March 17 the class will meet at the Sullivan Civic Center.

The fee for the Lifeguard review course is $90 for Mattoon Y members and $115 for non-members.

The YMCA will also offer a Community CPR course on Monday, Feb. 12 from 5:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.

This class will train you in First Aid/CPR/AED for Adult, Child, and Infants. Class is four hours in length and requires you to perform physical skills. In order to be certified you must participate in all skill sessions and scenarios and demonstrate competency in all required skills. Class will be held at the Y Community Room. If you are needing CPR PRO, please make arrangements with Austin, but you can still sign up for this class. The fee for this course is $50 per person. Register by calling 217-234-9494.
