What reminds you of the upcoming holiday season? Many people will mention food as one of the top items. Others will mention gifts ... Most will mention family gatherings.

For some, the holidays can bring hardships and serve as a reminder to people of the difficulties they face when trying to make the best of the Christmas Season for their loved ones.

RSVP Volunteers and Dial-A Ride Public Transportation Program will be two of the many groups in the community to help assist at the “One Stop Community Christmas” on Dec. 15 at the Salvation Army on 1300 Richmond Ave. in Mattoon.

One Stop Community Christmas is prepared to aid more than 600 families including 1,500 area children from five counties by handing out all the necessary supplies for the ideal Christmas morning. Presents, gift-wrapping paper and even the holiday ham will leave in the arms of grateful parents.

Karen Lee, RSVP volunteer coordinator, has worked diligently with the RSVP Volunteers in order to assist with providing additional manpower to see that this year’s One Stop Community Christmas goes off without a hitch.

Registered parents are invited to the Salvation Army where they will be greeted with a personal shopper to help them through the different gift stations and all families will be given supplies to prepare a delicious Christmas meal.

The Dial-A-Ride Program will also be helping out by offering transportation to parents or guardians in need who are not able to drive to the Salvation Army for the One Stop Community Christmas on that day for a donation.

In order to arrange for transportation, call 217-639-5169. Dial-A-Ride can take reservations up to two weeks in advance.
