The YMCA is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. This practice includes our wellness programs. Wellness is more than just exercising and eating right. The five dimensions on wellness include: emotional, intellectual, physical, social and spiritual.

For the first time, the Mattoon YMCA is offering the Total-Y Wellness Challenge. This six-week program will have daily tasks to help you challenge yourself to take a balanced approach to well-being. During the Total-Y Wellness Challenge, individuals will be encouraged to complete out-of-the-box missions such as call up an old friend, read for 20 minutes, volunteer for 30 minutes, unplug from technology and drink the recommended amount of water.

Even though you must be a Mattoon Y member to participate in this challenge, you do not have to complete the challenges within the YMCA. Total-Y Wellness is open to any Mattoon Y member 8 years of age or older. The program begins October 2nd and has a registration fee of $5. Mattoon Y members should call 217-234-9494 or stop by the welcome desk to register.

Does this program sound like something you are interested in even though you are not a Y member? Now is the time to join the Mattoon Y. There is no joining fee on all new or renewed memberships through the end of September. This is up to a $75 savings.

At the Y we believe everyone should have the opportunity to belong. For this reason, the Mattoon Y offers Membership for All. This is a scholarship based program where individuals and families may qualify for a lesser membership fee based on the household income level. Our desk staff will gladly share with you the process of applying for Membership for All so you may enjoy all the benefits of being a Y member.

The YMCA is known for bringing healthy living to our community. The Healthy Start program, offered at the Mattoon Y, is an example of providing opportunity to find positive change by helping individuals live a healthier lifestyle.

Healthy Start is an eight-week class that meets twice a week with a certified personal trainer. Each week Healthy Start offers tools and knowledge that you need to make informed decisions about how to improve your overall health. One day each week will include healthy living discussions on topics such as nutrition, reading labels, meal planning, sleep habits and stress management. The other day of the week will include an exercise discussion and a workout that will be modifiable for each person’s fitness level.

Healthy Start begins Sept. 25th and space will be limited for this class. When registering, participants should choose between the Monday/Wednesday class offered at noon or the 7 p.m. class also offered on Monday/Wednesday. The session will run through Nov. 15th. Because this program is limited in space and offers leadership from a certified personal trainer, there is a fee of $55 for Y members. Non-members may also call the Y for options to join Healthy Start by either becoming a member or paying the non-member fee of $120, which will include opportunity to use the Y during the program.

To learn more about living healthy, visit the Mattoon Area Family YMCA. The staff will listen to your interests and goals while helping you find a program or class that will place you among other members and staff who will help you meet those goals and challenge you to find your own strengths. Visit the Y at 221 N 16th Street, Mattoon.
