Youth Development at the Mattoon YMCA includes our many youth sports programs. Within youth sports, skills such as sportsmanship, teamwork and leadership are learned through participation. Indoor Soccer registration is now open at the Y.
Soccer is just as fun indoors as on the outside field. With small-sized teams, our indoor soccer program keeps the kids active even in the winter months. Youth Indoor Soccer is open to ages 4 to 14 with the season set to begin Jan. 26.
Youth are divided by age and will be divided by gender based on registration numbers. Youth ages 6-14 will participate in one practice each week with games played on Saturdays. Youth ages 4 and 5, will play on Friday evenings with no planned practices.
Early registration allows participants the opportunity to register at the best pricing. Register between Oct. 30 and Nov. 23 to save. Pricing during these dates are as follows: $25 for Y members; $45 for non-members. Anyone who registers, between Nov. 24th and Dec. 22, will pay $10 more per child.
We encourage parents to register the kids early, not only to save money, but to help us prepare for the season. Planning and preparation for the season is easier when staff have a better understanding of how many kids will be joining us in each age division.
Other upcoming youth programs include swim lessons, 7th-9th grade basketball league. Both of these programs will have registration open in December. 7th-9th grade basketball allow youth to expand their skills while staying active in the winter months. This league will be co-ed. Swim lessons at the Y provide skills that provide safety and confidence. Watch for future updates on our swim lessons as we strive to increase the potential of each swimmer with new lesson plans for 2018.
Ongoing programs such as Hang Time and Dance 101 are also featured youth programming at the Mattoon Y. Both of these programs are free with a Y membership and provide fun activities for the kids, giving parents opportunity to work out with their child-free time.
Hang Time is offered Monday through Thursday in the Y Youth Room. Each day brings a new activity with crafts, games, gym time and small group activities. This program is offered from 4-7:30 p.m. as a drop in activity for youth.
Dance 101 is a chance for youth to feel the beat and learn a few routines. This class is offered on Thursdays at 6:15 p.m. and offer 45 minutes of physical activity to burn off energy. Each week the instructor will break down choreography to one song to create a routine.
Programs such as Dance 101 and Hang Time are just a few of our free programs when you hold a membership at the Mattoon Y. If you are interested in membership, now is a great time to join. Bring in canned food items and join the Y by Nov. 17 as we will waive your joining fee. That is up to a $75 savings on membership! You can also ask the Y staff about Membership for All, a program that makes membership affordable to all.
