Throughout the year the Mattoon Area Family YMCA offers several opportunities for community members to register for sports programs such as basketball, soccer and volleyball. In addition to these, ongoing opportunities to play sports are available. Sports such as pickleball, indoor tennis and Early Riser basketball offer a chance to stay active and interact with others. These sports do not require registration and allow the convenience of attending when it fits your schedule.
Early Riser Basketball has been offered at the Mattoon Y for a few decades. It started out as a few men meeting at the Y to hit the courts for exercise. Over the years, this group has grown and became a part of the Y’s gym schedule every Tuesday and Friday morning at 6 a.m. until 7:30 a.m.. There are no referees, so players keep score, time and call their own fouls.
The Early Risers Basketball players welcome new players to join. With no registration, this activity is free to Y members. Non-members may also play with a fee of $4 per visit. Anyone 16 or older is encouraged to play.
Another fun and growing activity at the Y is pickleball. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning, you can hear the sound of the pickleball players in Bock Gym. Played with a small racket and a lightweight ball similar to a table tennis ball, pickleball is played as doubles at the Y. The courts are smaller than the average tennis court, requiring less running and making pickleball an excellent choice for those whom once were passionate for tennis but are less agile than before.
Three courts provide plenty of room for rotating players. The Mattoon Y pickleball players love introducing new players to the sport and if you are considering pickleball, stop by the Y welcome desk to borrow a racket. You will be rotated into a match while having the opportunity to learn the sport while also meeting many great individuals. Pickleball nets are available for play Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m.. This lively activity is free for Mattoon Y members and non-members may join the fun for $4 per visit.
On Tuesday and Thursday mornings, Bock gym is set aside for indoor tennis, allowing those who enjoy the game to play year round. A few tennis rackets are available at the Y welcome desk and our staff will gladly introduce you to others who currently play from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.. Y members enjoy use of the courts for free while non-members are welcome with a $4 per visit tennis pass.
