MATTOON (JG-TC) -- Police officers arrested two Coles County residents on Wednesday for allegedly perpetrating a check-writing scheme.

A Mattoon Police Department press release reported that Charles R. Buck, 48, of Mattoon and Amy S. Cavanah, 37, of Charleston were each arrested on  prohibited deposits charges late Wednesday morning at the police station. The charges allege that the two were involved in a check-writing scheme.

Cavanah would allegedly write checks from her personal checking account to Buck, knowing that she did not have the funds to cover the checks. Buck would allegedly deposit these checks into his account and then immediately withdraw the funds, knowing that Cavanah did not have the funds in her account to cover his deposit. Both were taken to the jail.

In other matters, Susan E. Sayers, 54, of Mattoon was arrested on a charge of criminal trespass to a residence at 11:28 a.m. Wednesday in the 2200 block of Prairie Avenue. The charge alleges that Sayers was found to be present at a residence that she had previously been banned from by the resident. Sayers was taken to the jail.
