CHARLESTON (JG-TC) -- A Champaign band specializing in the high energy that was a mainstay in '50s and '60s rock'n'roll is set to make its way down to Eastern Illinois University for Family Weekend.

Captain Rat and the Blind Rivets is headlining the weekend's events from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the Concert Hall at Doudna Fine Arts Center.

According to group's website, along with performing these oldies, band members will be sporting "props, silly hats, funny faces and zany antics."

Food will be available for cost at the concert. According to the schedule, the menu will include a pork burger meal with baked potato and fixin’s, brownies and tea or lemonade.

The meal alone will cost $12. A bundle of concert/meal ticket can be purchased at $20, or $15 for EIU students. Concert-only tickets will also be available at $10 or $5 for EIU students.

Also at 7 p.m. Saturday, organizers have an assortment of activities that will be scattered throughout the University Union on campus as part of "FUN-Fest." At the union, there will be creation stations, movies, roving artists, interactive games, door prizes, giveaways and refreshments. The festival-like activities will end at 11 p.m.

Kicking off the weekend, the EIU Quidditch Tournament is open for the public to participate or watch starting from 4-6 p.m. Friday in the Library Quad. As previously reported, Quidditch players are still being sought to fill out each Hogwarts house including Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin and Ravenclaw.

Later that day, Lynn Trefger, a recognized ventriloquist comedian who performs at colleges, theaters, corporations and cruise ships, will be performing, according to the Family Weekend schedule.

Other activities scheduled over the weekend:

  • Family GLO BINGO Bonanza from 9 to 11 p.m. Friday at the McAfee Gymnasium.
  • Tarble Art Extravaganza where kids will be able to create and take home art as well as get a chance to see the exhibits on display in the Tarble Arts Center from 1-4 p.m. Saturday.

More information on these events can be found on the EIU Family Weekend webpage.
