MATTOON (JG-TC) -- A man was arrested Saturday night for reportedly firing a gun while he was near a Mattoon tavern.

Geremy Echevarrja-Ortolaza was arrested after the shots were reported about 10:30 p.m. near The Local on 45 tavern on north U.S. Route 45, according to a news release from the Mattoon Police Department.

Echevarrja-Ortolaza, 35, of Mattoon was located near the tavern when police arrived, the release said. It said he was arrested on suspicion of reckless discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Police Chief Jeff Branson said Echevarrja-Ortolaza was intoxicated and was across Route 45 from the tavern while he shot the gun. He shot into the air and wasn't trying to hit anyone, Branson said.

The news release said Echevarrja-Ortolaza was taken to the Coles County jail pending a court appearance and filing of formal charges.
