CHARLESTON (JG-TC) — The Charleston Food Pantry will start offering extended hours on Thursday nights.

The longer Thursday night hours will be from 5:30-7 p.m. at the food pantry, 990 W. State St. Extended hours are open to everyone in the community, pantry officials said.

Also, Eastern Illinois University will provide a shuttle service to the food pantry for all students, faculty and staff, as long as they present their Panther ID card.

The shuttle will start its first pickup at 5:30 p.m. and will conduct its last rounds at 6:45 p.m.

According to a press release, the program is being offered as a pilot based upon both interest and need within the community.

“The reason for the extended hours is that there was expressed interest and need for them,” the press release stated. “The regular operating hours of the pantry may not always be convenient for all students who are in class and people who are working during the day so this offers a completely different time frame for those people to come in and benefit from the pantry.”

The Charleston Food Pantry’s normal hours of operation are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30-4 p.m.
