MATTOON (JG-TC) -- Police officers have arrested a Chicago area man for allegedly battering three children.

A Mattoon Police Department press release reported that Earl H. Criglear, 29, of Harvey was arrested at 4 p.m. Monday in the 1800 block of South Ninth Street on a charge of aggravated battery to a child under 13 years of age.

The charge alleges that Criglear whipped three children with a belt to the point of leaving marks in various places upon the children’s bodies. The victims ranged from five 5 to 7 years in age. Criglear was taken to the Coles County jail.

In other matters, Roberto C. Melendez, 28, of Mattoon was arrested at 3:23 p.m. Monday in the 3400 block of Shelby Avenue on a charge of criminal damage to property. The charge alleges that he broke a window at Douglas Rehabilitation & Care Center, 3516 Powell Lane. Melendez was issued a notice to appear in court.
