SPRINGFIELD (JG-TC) -- Students from the Mattoon and Charleston school districts competed on Saturday at the Illinois Drill Team Association state finals at the Prairie Capitol Convention Center in Springfield.
The Mattoon district reported on its Facebook page that the Mattoon High School varsity Wavettes won the state championship in AA varsity pom. They also placed second with their lyrical routine and third with their jazz routine. They also were awarded third place place grand champions for having the third highest total scores for all varsity teams in the state. The team is coached by Malia Smith.
Mattoon High School's junior varsity Wavettes earned first place with their jazz routine. The team is coached by Whitney Babbs.
The Mattoon Middle School Purrfections earned third place with their lyrical routine. They also were awarded third place grand champions for having the third highest total scores for all middle schools in the state. The team is coached by Hillary Love.
Charleston High School's Winter Guard Drill Team won second place in the AA lyrical flag category, said coach and director Angel Warman. She said the Charleston Middle School's Little Trojets, coached by Taylor Wiechech, won third place in the high kick category for junior highs.
