MATTOON (JG-TC) -- Police officers have arrested two Mattoon men on charges of motor vehicle theft and burglary.

A Mattoon Police Department press release reported that Marco A. West, 21, and Dashawn A. Hanton, 23, were arrested at approximately 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the police station. Both suspects were charged with four counts of theft of a motor vehicle and one count of burglary from a motor vehicle.

The charges allege that the pair stole items from a car during the early morning hours of June 29, and that they subsequently stole a total of four cars on that morning as well. Two of the cars were crashed near the intersection of Old State and Lerna roads. Two other cars were later abandoned.

Parole violation charges for West are also being sought by Mattoon police. Those charges allege that West was on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections, for theft of a motor vehicle, at the time of the new alleged offenses. Both suspects were taken to the Coles County jail.
