MATTOON -- Construction work is almost done on a new retail center on the east side of town where Mattoon's first-ever Starbucks location and other businesses are slated to open sometime early next year.
In addition, construction work is scheduled to be completed in mid-January on another new retail center nearby at the southeast corner of Dettro Drive and Remington Road, southeast of Walmart.
Thompson Thrift Retail Group of Indianapolis is constructing the Starbucks retail center, known as Mattoon Marketplace 3, between Cracker Barrel and the existing Mattoon Marketplace 2 building, which is home to Bamca Mexican Grill, All About Eyes and other businesses.
Chelsea Hudelson, retail marketing coordinator for Thompson Thrift, said construction of this five-unit retail center is almost done. She said the leased units in this 11,400-square-foot building will soon be handed over to the tenants.
"The only three we can announce right now are Starbucks, Great Clips and AT & T. We are expecting those three tenants to be open in early 2018," Hudelson said. She added that Thompson Thrift is still finalizing plans for the other two units in Mattoon Marketplace 3.
Starbucks is slated to open in a space with a drive-through at the east end of this new retail center. Starbucks operates area locations in Charleston and Effingham, but has never before opened a location in Mattoon. The Starbucks company could not be reached for comment regarding its plans in Mattoon.
Thompson Thift started its Mattoon Marketplace developments in 2007 by renovating a former Kmart building along the east side of Dettro Drive. The developer later expanded this facility. The building is now anchored by Buffalo Wild Wings and PetSmart.
Effingham-based developers are constructing the new 9,938-square-foot North Wind Shopping Centre at 905 Remington Road. Michelle Sowell, corporate administration and marketing director for Senior Health Specialties in Effingham, said construction of this building is scheduled to be completed by Jan. 15.
"Mattoon Chiropractic has secured 2,800 square foot on the west side of the Centre. The remaining space is available for lease. We offer versatile plans and competitive pricing," Sowell said.
The North Wind Shopping Centre building that is under construction is slated to be the first of a three phase project. Sowell said the developers plan to eventually construct an approximately 20,000-square-foot phase two building to the east of the North Wind Shopping Centre and will then look to develop the south end of the project sometime in the future.
"We chose Mattoon due to the interstate access, location of the property with the city's future economic plans, and because we have an existing business here," Sowell said.
The Efffingham-based developers also have constructed the Copper Creek Memory Care Memory Care facility at the northeast corner of Dettro Drive and Country Club Road.
