MATTOON (JG-TC) -- A passerby pulled two people out of a vehicle after an accident near Mattoon on Sunday morning.

The passerby left the scene after removing the driver and a passenger from the vehicle after it went down into a ditch on Lerna Road about a mile south of Mattoon, according to Chief Pat Goodwin of the Lincoln Fire Protection District.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene about 8:40 a.m. Sunday and found the vehicle in flames, Goodwin said. However, the driver and passenger were already out of the vehicle, he said.

Goodwin said the vehicle left the road and hit a tree. Both of the vehicle's occupants were taken to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center after the accident, he said.

The passerby's identity and additional details about the accident weren't available. Goodwin said the Coles County Sheriff's Office is investigating the accident.
