CHARLESTON -- An investigation into an alleged arson recently led the arrests of two individuals, according to Charleston police.
The press release from the police states that Dalton R.T. Smith, 19 of Charleston was arrested for arson following an incident where Charleston Fire personnel responded to a vehicle fire at 2:06 a.m. June 2 at R & W Trucking at the intersection of 11th Street and Poplar Avenue.
Police state that the investigation into the fire led to Smith’s arrest, who is suspected of stealing that vehicle from Mattoon, along with another unnamed juvenile suspect, and driving it to Charleston where they set it on fire.
Further investigation into the incident led police to the discovery of several other burglaries and criminal damage incidents in Charleston between May 22 and June 2 involving Smith and the juvenile suspect along with a third suspect, Kory W. Grove, 19, also of Charleston, according to the release.
The three allegedly were involved in burglarizing the concession stand at the Charleston High School football field of candy on “at least” three separate nights, the release states.
The investigation into these and other related crimes is ongoing, the release reads.
