In response to renaming Douglas Hall after Frederick Douglass: Lincoln, Stevenson and Douglas Halls were named after Illinois political leaders. Abraham Lincoln, Governor Stevenson and Stephen Douglas not Frederick Douglass. Even though Steven Douglas favored slavery he was an Illinois leader. Frederick Douglass was not. He was an advocate for ending slavery not an Illinois leader. I will not go into whether he was a former slave or not. The renaming would not be in keeping with principles of the university. Which is to teach history among other things. Frederick Douglass should be recognized for black history. Not on a residence hall of Illinois Political Leaders. History can't be changed. Let's not change Douglas Hall to Frederick Douglass.
