My father retired as an ATF agent in 1954. He believed in the second amendment, was an avid hunter who each year would hunt deer in the Black Hills of South Dakota, antelope in Wyoming, pheasants and ducks in South Dakota. Yet, he would be appalled that ordinary citizens are allowed to convert semi-automatic weapons into rapid fire “machine guns!” Automatic weapons and armor piercing bullets have only one objective and that is to be used in combat situations to kill other men. Yet, the “politics” of Illinois soundly rejected the ban of using “bump stocks.”
The states that have placed a ban on selling bump stocks include: California, Massachusetts, Washington D.C. and twelve other states. Do you suppose that “big” money may have been the reason that both Democrats and Republicans in downstate Illinois voted not to reject the use of bump stocks? State representative Jerry Costello, a Smithton Democrat whose district includes the World Shooting and Recreation Complex, voted against banning the bump stocks. The complex has a $24 million dollar annual economic impact on the region!
Those Illinois state representatives who voted not to ban the bump stocks may have voted for banning bump stocks if their son or daughter had been one of the fifty-eight innocent young people killed while enjoying the concert in Las Vegas. Even more disturbing is that the measure failed when 54 legislators voted against the ban!
