Shelbyville downs Sullivan
SHELBYVILLE (JG-TC) -- The Shelbyville volleyball team defeated Sullivan in two sets Thursday in a Central Illinois Conference match: 25-12 and 25-10. Shelbyville improves to 16-6 overall and 5-0 in the conference.
Lauren Russell led the Lady Rams with nine digs, Elizabeth Bowyer got two blocks and Mallorie Mason had 15 assists.
The Lady Redskins earned five kills for the evening. Laine Cameron got five assists.
Sullivan hosts Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg for a non-conference match Tuesday.
Shelbyville and Pana host an Invitational tournament Saturday at Pana.
Casey-Westfield wins LIC match
BRIDGEPORT—Casey-Westfield defeated Red Hill in a Little Illini Conference match Thursday in two sets: 25-7 and 25-10.
Myriah Warner led the Lady Warriors with five aces and 10 digs. Ashlyn Jones got four kills.
The Lady Warriors improve to 7-15 overall, 4-2 in the conference, and host Marshall for another conference match, the ninth annual Volley for the Cure as well as senior night on Thursday. Volley for the Cure will feature a faculty match between the JV and Varsity contests and a raffle with many prizes available including a 50 CC Husqvarna chainsaw donated by Riedle Inc.
HILLSBORO—The Shelbyville girls’ tennis team lost to Hillsboro 7-2 Thursday in a non-conference meet.
Rachel Bly won her singles match for the Lady Rams. Kat Martin and Amber Rezinas won their doubles match.
Shelbyville travels to Mattoon for another non-conference meet Monday.
Seventh seeded WSS reaches championship game
EFFINGHAM -- WSS, the number seven seeded team in the nine team National Trail Conference scored four runs in the first inning of Wednesday's semifinal game en route to 12-4 win over sixth seeded North Clay at Evergreen Hollow Park.
Beau Bennett was a perfect 5-for-5 with a triple and two runs batted in, while Christian Kessler was 4-for-5 with four RBIs for the Hatchets in the victory.
Logan Gruel, Kessler and Owen Bridges combined to allow five hits to North Clay for WSS.
EFFINGHAM -- The two-time defending National Trail Conference Tournament champions, WSS, enters the 2017 version of the tournament as the top-seeded team. The Hatchets are to start play Oct. 12 against Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 5 p.m. and take on sixth seeded Neoga at 7 p.m., while Neoga takes on CH/BC at 6 p.m. in Pool A play. The games in Pool A are all to be at the Enlow Center.
Also at the Enlow Center, Altamont, Dieterich and South Central all play in Pool B games on Oct. 13 and at Goff Gym the Pool C games involving Effingham St. Anthony, St. Elmo/Brownstown and North Clay are to be played. Altamont is the second seeded team.
All games are to be the best out of three sets to 25 with no cap and there is to be an all-tournament team announced after the matches on Oct. 14 at the Enlow Center.
