Arthur-Lovington downs Okaw Valley in LOVC opener

ARTHUR—The Knights won their Little Okaw Valley Conference opener Friday 60-25 over Okaw Valley.

Tyler Schuring led Arthur-Lovington with 15 points.

The Knights held Okaw Valley to a scoreless third quarter in the first conference game for both teams this season.

Devon Still scored nine points to lead the Timberwolves.

Arthur-Lovington has won six games in a row and has a 10-1 record. The Knights play at Cerro Gordo for another LOVC match-up Tuesday.

Okaw Valley drops to 3-10 in its fourth straight loss. The Timberwolves play agains Clay City at 10 a.m. today in the Effingham St. Anthony Shootout.

Casey-Westfield falls as Newton rallies

NEWTON—Newton came from behind Friday to defeat Casey-Westfield 62-60 in Friday’s Little Illini Conference boys’ basketball game.

The Warriors jumped out to 19-9 lead in the first quarter, but Newton whittled five points away in the second period, outscoring Casey 15-10 to trail 29-24 at the half.

In the third quarter, Newton moved three points closer to trail 43-41. The Eagles outscored Casey 21-17 in the final period for the win.

Casey drops to 7-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference. The Warriors play Troy Triad today at 2:30 p.m. in the Effingham St. Anthony Shootout.

Martinsville drops LOVC opener

BROADLANDS—Martinsville lost its Little Okaw Valley Conference opener Friday night to Villa Grove/Heritage 65-20.

Brian Hinkle scored a season-high 13 points to lead the Bluestreaks.

Martinsville falls to 0-10 and hosts Okaw Valley in another LOVC game next Friday.

Argenta gets past Shelbyville

ARGENTA — Trailing 24-9 at the half, Argenta-Oreana rebounded with a strong second half to edge past Shelbyville 49-45 in Okaw Valley Conference boys’ basketball play Friday. Argenta outscored Shelbyville 40-21 in the second half of the game.

Shelbyville’s Cwenton Williams led all players in scoring with 20 points.

Shelbyville, 4-8 overall and 1-1 in the OVC, is to play host to a conference game against Monticello on Tuesday.

ST. ELMO — Stewardson-Strasburg fell to St. Elmo/Brownstown in National Trail Conference action on Friday.

St. Elmo’s Levi Maxey outscored all players with 23 points. Three Stew-Stras players scored in double-digits with Brandon Helmuth leading the team with 16 points, followed by Bryce Bugger with 14 and Jason Fry with 11.

Stew-Stras, 3-9 overall and 0-3 in the NTC, is to play in the St. Anthony Shootout today at 3 p.m.

Arcola beats Arthur-Okaw Christian

LOVINGTON—Arcola defeated Arthur-Okaw Christian 63-44 Friday night in a non-conference basketball game.

Wyatt Fishel led the Purple Riders with 19 points. Chase Strader and Clayton Strader also broke into double figures with 13 and 10, respectively.

Isaiah Lowry led Arthur-Okaw with 19.

Arcola improves to 8-4 and hosts Tri-County in a Little Okaw Valley Conference game Tuesday.

Arthur-Okaw Christian is scheduled to play in the Dayspring Basketball Classis Jan. 17-18.
