Arcola wins first tourney game
DIETERICH (JG-TC) — The Arcola boys’ basketball team defeated Oblong 51-47 in its first game of the Dieterich Boys’ Holiday Tournament on Tuesday.
The Purple Riders fell behind 15-12 in the first quarter, but outscored Oblong 14-8 in the second period to lead 26-23 at halftime. Arcola stretched its lead to 43-36 in the third quarter and held on for the win as Oblong outscored the Purple Riders 11-8 in the final period.
Three Arcola players broke into double figures: Myles Roberts scored 21 to lead the Purple Riders, Ivan Franco hit a season high 11 points and Hugo Garza added 10 points.
Arcola improves to 3-5 and plays North Clay at 4 p.m. Wednesday followed by a 7 p.m. game against host Dieterich as the tournament continues.
Casey-Westfield routs Northview
TERRE HAUTE, Ind.—Casey-Westfield beat Northview 89-49 in its opening game at the First Financial Wabash Valley Classic on Tuesday.
Luke Richards led the Warriors with 22 points. Three other Casey-Westfield players scored in double digits: Logan Hawker got 18 points, Kyle Carver added 14 and Ethan Gilbert hit 12. Jarod Brandenburg led the team with five assists while Gilbert, Carver and Richards each got four rebounds.
Casey-Westfield improves to 9-1 and plays Terre Haute North at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday as the tournament continues.
Casey-Westfield downs Dieterich
DIETERICH—Casey-Westfield’s girls’ basketball team doubled down on Dieterich 64-32 Tuesday in its first game at the Dieterich Girls’ Holiday Tournament.
The Lady Warriors dominated the first quarter taking a 13-5 lead and widened the margin to 33-12 by the half. Only in the last period did Dieterich outscore Casey-Westfield 13-9.
Myriah Warner scored a season high 29 points in the game and Mackenzie Morgan contributed 20 points.
Casey-Westfield improves to 9-4 and faces Arcola at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday followed by a 2:30 p.m. game against Newton as the tournament pool play continues.
