Vaughn, Cornell headed to State Prelims
MOWEAQUA — Several area boys basketball players participated in the sectional championship three-point showdown on Friday. Of those players, Nick Vaughn of Arcola advanced to state after making 11 of 15 baskets, and Mitchell Cornell of Neoga advanced to state after sinking eight baskets.
Others that participated in the Class 1A sectional championship but did not advance to state are: Alec Downs from Arcola, Mason Hutchinson from Tri-County and Gage Sattler from WSS. The contest was done prior to the sectional championship game won by Central A&M 69-56 over Nokomis.
Other local players participated in the Class 2A sectional championship three-point showdown but did not advance. Those individuals are: Myles Gerhardt from Cumberland, Logan Hawker from Casey-Westfield, Malcolm Miller and Turner Pullen of Shelbyville. The contest was done prior to the sectional championship game won by Mount Carmel 48-47 over Teutopolis.
The Class 1A state preliminaries are at 5 p.m. Thursday at Peoria's Carver Arena in the Peoria Civic Center.
Noe, Princko advance in three-point contest
MAHOMET — Mattoon's Jaydon Noe and Jadyn Princko advanced in the Class 3A Country Financial Three-Point Contest. Both players made nine of 15 three-pointers and advanced to the Decatur Eisenhower for the sectional championship March 9.
Jake Ghere made seven and Camdyn Considine made five, but did not make enough to be one of the top four to advance.
The four shot prior to the regional championship game won by Springfield Southeast 94-81 over Decatur Eisenhower.
Landrus advances in three-point contest
PARIS — Charleston's Cade Landrus was one of the top four three-point shooters in the Country Financial Three-Point Contest. Landrus moves on to the Decatur Eisenhower sectional championship March 9.
Landrus made the second most of anyone with 11-of-15 prior to the regional championship game between Champaign Central and Effingham at Ernie Eveland Gym. Central won the game 76-45.
AOC boys take third at NACA Nationals
DAYTON, Tenn.— Arthur-Okaw Christian boys basketball team took third place and ended the season in the National Association of Christian Athletes (NACA) National Tournament on Friday.
In the first game on Friday, AOC fell 78-64 against Lighthouse Private Christian Academy from Pensacola, Florida in the semifinals. For AOC, Ian Lowry had a triple-double with 23 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists. Benjamin Lee had 17 points, and Trevor Beachy had 15 points.
In the final game of the day, season and NACA Nationals for AOC the Conquering Riders defeated Mountain Top Christian Academy from Horicon, Wisconsin 57-45. For AOC, Peter Lee had 12 points, Oliver Binion had 11 points and Benjamin Lee had 11 points.
AOC wrapped up the season with a 30-9 record.
AOC girls take fifth at NACA Nationals
DAYTON, Tenn.— Arthur-Okaw Christian girls’ basketball team took fifth place in the final game of the NACA National Tournament on Friday. AOC defeated Carroll Christian Academy 45-25.
AOC played in Division 4 this week which was the highest level division played by AOC during the NACA National Tournament.
For AOC, Lillian Messmore had six assists and finished her career with 960 points. Lindsay Mast had 10 points and Savanna Spitz had 16 points.
Arthur-Okaw Christian girls basketball finished their season with a 24-12 record.
