Effingham defeats Charleston
EFFINGHAM — The Charleston boys' basketball team had an 11-9 lead on Effingham in the first quarter, but the Flaming Hearts scored the final five points of the quarter to take the lead. Then Effingham held Charleston to eight points in the second quarter and pulled away for a 63-45 win.
Darrell Phillips led Charleston, which fell to 7-14 overall and 1-9 in the Apollo Conference, with 15 points. Dayton Simpson had nine points, Luke Buescher had five points and Chase Staggs had four points. Cade Landrus had three points.
Taylorville beats Mattoon
TAYLORVILLE — The Mattoon boys' basketball team trailed by five points in the second half, but Taylorville went on a big run and pulled away from Mattoon for a 66-44 win.
Mattoon, which fell to 8-12 overall and 1-8 in the Apollo Conference, had 21 turnovers in the loss and shot 12-of-43 from the field. Deandre Thomas led Mattoon with 12 points, Jaydon Noe had nine points and Cam Considine had eight points. Jake Ghere had six points and Jacob Spitz had four points.
