VALPARAISO, Ind. (EIU) – Eastern Illinois volleyball traveled to Indiana to take on Valparaiso in a non-conference match-up Wednesday evening. The Panthers lost to the Crusaders in a four-set match (25-13, 25-17, 18-25, 25-14).
The Panthers had their best hitting average of the match in the third set totaling .220. Maria Brown and Laurel Bailey led the Panthers in kills for the day, each totaling 13.
The Panthers' most dominant set of the day was the third set, where they challenged the Crusaders by tying the set five times and taking the lead three times. Bailey gave the Panthers the offensive push they were looking for recording three kills in the third set.
Taylor Smith recorded her third double-double of the season finishing with a team high 21 assists and 17 digs. Bailey also earned a double-double marking her fourth of the season with 13 kills and 14 digs. Leading defensively for the Panthers was Anne Hughes, who tallied a team high 22 digs.
Valparaiso came out firing and hit .375 in the first set with just two attack errors. Valparaiso was active at the net, finishing with ten total blocks.
The Panthers return to action Saturday where they will travel to Terre Haute to participate in the Indiana State Tournament, taking on Cal State Fullerton and Indiana State. EIU will battle Cal State Fullerton to open up the second day of the Indiana State Tournament at 10 a.m. and close out the tournament against Indiana State at 6 p.m.
EIU Mens' Soccer Suffers First loss of the season
HUNTINGTON, Wv. (EIU) — Marshall scored in the opening two minutes to set the aggressive tone for the rest of the match. The Herd found the back of the net two more times, handing Eastern Illinois men's soccer a 0-3 loss, which is their first loss this season.
Marshall's Lewis Knight scored their first goal just after the first minute of play and was assisted by Dion Stergiotis. Pedro Dolabella scored Marshall's second goal in the 14th minute off a pass from Brayan Lopez-Mendez. The Herd did not score again until the 69th minute when Adi Dakwar found the back of the net off a pass from Stergiotis, earning him his second assist of the night.
EIU had one shot for the match coming in the first half from Edgar Mesa. Marshall took 27 shots with 14 on goal. Knight led the Herd with six shots on goal. Stergiotis and Dolabella each had two on goal.
Goalkeeper Mike Novotny played all 90 minutes between the posts for the Panthers. He tallied 11 saves, with eight of them coming in the second half. Novotny currently has a save percentage of .914 and has recorded 53 saves through the first seven matches.
EIU will be on the road again Sunday to play Evansville at 2 p.m.
