Knapp named OVC female field athlete of the week
Eastern Illinois senior high jumper Haleigh Knapp was named the Ohio Valley Conference co-female field athlete of the week following her performance at the Illinois Classic last weekend. Knapp previously was named OVC Field athlete of the week earlier this season. Knapp won the high jump clearing her season-best height with her height of 6'00.50". Knapp's height broke her school record for the second time this year. Knapp currently sits in the top spot in the OVC and ranks fourth in the NCAA high jump.
The Panthers are set to compete in the Notre Dame Meyo Invite this weekend, where the Panthers will compete against athletes from 29 other schools. The Notre Dame Meyo Invite will begin at 3 p.m. (CST) on Friday with the field events and 8:45 a.m. (CST) on Saturday with the running events.
O'Brien wins OVC tennis player of the week
Eastern Illinois sophomore Freddie O’Brien was named the Ohio Valley Conference male tennis player of the week after posting a 2-1 record in singles play to open the spring season.
O’Brien opened the season playing at No. 1 singles for the Panthers and lost his first match of the year at Indiana against a nationally ranked opponent. In the next two matches, O’Brien picked up a pair of wins, including scoring EIU’s only point of the match in the loss to Ball State.
On Tuesday of this week, O’Brien moved his singles record to 3-1 on the year as he helped the Panthers pick up their first win of the season with a 5-2 decision at Chicago State.
EIU returns to action this weekend as the Panthers travel to Dayton and Wright State.
O’Brien is the first EIU men’s tennis player to win player of the week honors since Ryan Henderson on Feb. 9, 2016.
