BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (EIU) -- Mack Smith from Eastern Illinois men’s basketball has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week for the second time this season after helping the Panthers split a pair of home games last weekend.
On Saturday against Tennessee Tech, Smith set the EIU freshman single game scoring record as he finished with 31 points as the Panthers picked up a 79-71 win over the Golden Eagles. For the weekend Smith averaged 22.5 points per game shooting 57 percent from the field and 54 percent from 3-point range (7-of-13). He was perfect from the free throw line in six attempts. In addition Smith averaged 3.5 rebounds per game while handing out four assists and blocking one shot.
Smith has now scored in double figures in six straight games winning OVC Freshman of the Week honors during two of the last three weeks. For the season he is averaging 10.5 points per game while knocking down 32 3-pointers.
EIU returns to action this Thursday playing at SIUE at 7 p.m. before returning home to host Austin Peay on Saturday. At Saturday’s home doubleheader Fredbird, the mascot of the St. Louis Cardinals, will be at the game taking pictures and handing out a couple of sets of tickets to a Cardinals/Cubs game in May.
EIU track finishes strong at Notre Dame
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Eastern Illinois men's and women's indoor track & field teams finished strong in the final day of the Notre Dame Meyo Invite. The Panthers combined for eight top 15 finishes to close out the invite.
The highlight in the final day of action at the Meyo Invite was the quartet of Pedra Hicks, Darneisha Spann, Stephanie Dominguez, and Shirley Jones which earned a spot in the EIU record books for the 4x400 meter relay. Their time of 3.51.03 moved the quartet into the tenth spot in the EIU record book for the relay.
Clayton Turner was the top finisher for the men earning fifth place honors in the shot put with his distance of 53-05.00 feet.
Ryan Pearce and Colton Yeakley also earned top 15 finishes for the Panthers in the shot put. Pearce claimed eighth with his throw of 51-09.00, and Yeakley grabbed 12th (50-06.00).
Davion McManis earned a sixth place finish in the long jump with his distance of 23-04.50. Chrisford Stevens followed suit finishing behind McManis in seventh with his distance of 23-04.00.
In the track events Brandan Lane earned sixth place honors in the 60 meter dash crossing the line at 6.93.
EIU women's tennis beats St. Louis
O’FALLON, Mo. – Eastern Illinois women’s tennis finished the weekend 2-0 as the Panthers beat Saint Louis, 5-2, on Sunday evening. The win comes following a Panthers 7-0 win over Western Illinois on Saturday afternoon.
EIU opened winning the doubles point with Grace Summers and Stella Cliffe taking the No. 1 doubles match by a score of 6-2. Claire Martin and Srishti Slaria teamed up at No. 2 doubles for the Panthers picking up a 6-4 win to secure the point.
In singles play Slaria put the Panthers up 2-0 on the day beating Gabi Papachrisanthou at No. 6 singles by a score of 6-0, 6-2. SLU was able to cut the EIU lead in half with a win by Alba Salinas at No. 5 singles over Karla Contreras.
Cliffe pushed EIU’s margin back to 3-1 with a win at No. 2 singles over Cassie McKenzie. Cliffe won 7-6 (1), 6-3.
The Panthers sealed the win and added a final point with wins at No. 1 singles by Rachel Papavasilopoulos and at No. 4 singles by Emily Pugachevsky. Papavasilopoulos beat Ally McKenzie in three sets 5-7, 7-5, 6-2. Pugachevsky also needed three sets to secure her win over Alana Bourgeois winning 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
