CHARLESTON (EIU) — Itxaso Aguero hit an indirect kick off the post in the 103rd minute that bounced around the goal box for a few seconds before Kate Olson was able to head in the golden goal giving Eastern Illinois a 3-2 victory over Fort Wayne on Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
EIU improved to 4-2-1 on the season and hosts Western Illinois on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. Fort Wayne fell to 0-6 on the season.
EIU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half scoring both goals roughly two minutes apart. Henar Urteaga scored the Panthers' first goal as she beat a defender and then the Fort Wayne goalkeeper on a scramble for a ball sent into the goal box by Ali Carlson. The goal was scored in the 35th minute.
Hannah Heinz found the back of the net for the second straight game two minutes and three seconds later as she had a one touch goal off an assist sent into the box by Kayla Stolfa. Stolfa is coming off a match on Sunday in which she set the EIU record for assists in a game while tying the Ohio Valley Conference record with four. Stolfa is the reigning OVC Defender of the Week.
Fort Wayne did not go away, as the Mastodons continued to apply pressure on EIU goalkeeper Maddie Lyon in the second half. Chloee Foor dribbled a ball from the left side and drove to the middle of the goal box and beat the keeper with a high left shot in the 79th minute.
The Mastodons evened the match at 2-2 just 28 seconds later as Jessica Schoenfeldt scored on a head flick from a cross sent in by Kallianne Mogler.
Late in the match, both teams added additional shots. EIU finished the match with 10 shots on goal and 18 overall shots. Fort Wayne had seven shots on goal and 16 overall shots.
