ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Lake Land softball team lost its first game in the NJCAA tournament Friday, falling to Salt Lake 6-1. The Lakers picked up a win in the afternoon as they defeated Howard 11-3 to stay alive.
Emily Oestreich pitched both games for Lake Land. In the first game, she allowed nine hits and struck out four batters in six innings. In the second game, she allowed seven hits and struck out one in seven innings.
Samantha Valentine hit a solo home run in the seventh inning of the first game for the only Laker score against Salt Lake. Lake Land fell behind early with Salt Lake scoring two first-inning runs and a run in the second inning. Laina Suesue hit a home run for the Salt Lake Bruins.
Salt Lake had nine hits to seven by Lake Land, and both teams committed two errors.
In the second game, Howard scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, but Lake Land tied the score in the second and took control of the game, scoring four runs in the third inning to make it 5-1. The Lakers then added three runs in the fourth innning and three more in the seventh inning.
Also in the second game, Kendra Gengenbacher had two home runs and four RBIs. Tegan Murphy tripled, and Haylee Short hit a double.
Lake Land played Florida SouthWestern State at 8:30 p.m. Friday in the losers’ bracket. The Lakers defeated that team 16-8 on Thursday and must win to have a chance for the championship.
