TOLEDO – Kennedy Gabel had seven kills and 12 digs in Cumberland’s 25-17, 25-19 non-conference volleyball win over Martinsville Monday.

The Lady Pirates raised their record to 6-1 without their best performance.

“I thought my girls played better over the weekend,” said coach Monica McNeil, whose team played in the Altamont Invitational. “I think Saturday really wore us down playing four matches. We struggled with the basics tonight.

“I thought Martinsville played an excellent game. They were scrappy and got up.”

Emma Scott had 11 digs and Megan Lowry three kills for Martinsville, which fell to 2-5.

Cumberland is to open its Little Illini Conference season playing host to Oblong on Thursday.

Martinsville has a home match against Palestine-Hutsonville tonight.
