CHICAGO — Did you know Eastern Illinois University has 219 buildings on campus and 12 dormitories?
Dick Versace cited those numbers as part of his looking into the men’s basketball coaching job.
The former NBA coach of the Indiana Pacers and president of the Memphis Grizzlies also could tell you EIU charged $7 for chair back seats and $3 for others at games.
“I’m still in the process of finding out some things,” Versace said.
Last week, Versace, now living in Chicago, said he was interested in the vacant position but had not yet applied.
The coach of Bradley’s 1982 National Invitational Tournament championship team before getting into the NBA said he remained “very curious” about EIU in a return to coaching at age 71.
He asked about returning and departing EIU players as well as the incoming recruits and remaining scholarships.
He said he knew that EIU’s modest Lantz Arena was considered by many a negative about the job but said it also could be deemed a Duke-like Cameron Indoor Stadium of the Ohio Valley Conference.
Versace also said he would be anxious to get started recruiting for what would be one of the richest years in the state of Illinois with the current class of high school juniors.
“I’m very close to the most powerful AAU coach in Illinois or the Midwest,” he said. “The AAU coaches are the most powerful now. It used to be the high school coach.”
