CHARLESTON (EIU) — Eastern Illinois baseball earned their third conference win of the season today, defeating Belmont 8-6. The Panthers combined for six unanswered runs through the first four innings of play.
With the win, Eastern Illinois advances to 11-20 (3-10 OVC), while Belmont drops to 13-20 (8-8 OVC).
Tyler Jones picked up his fourth win of the season, tossing six innings, with eight hits, six runs (three earned) and four strikeouts. Michael Starcevich came in to relieve Jones in the seventh inning and earned his sixth save of the season. He struck out two batters.
Dougie Parks and Hunter Morris put EIU up 2-0 in the first. Parks hit an RBI double and Morris had an RBI single.
In the fourth, EIU scored four runs. Josh Turnock scored on Tyler Tesmond's ground ball and Joseph Duncan hit an RBI double. Jimmy Govern then hit a two-run single for a 6-0 lead.
Belmont scored five runs in the fifth to make it 6-5.
In the bottom half of the inning, Turnock and Tesmond each had an RBI single to extend EIU's lead to 8-5.
Belmont added a run in the sixth, but EIU held on for the 8-6 win.
Duncan finished 2-for-5 with a double a run and an RBI. Govern finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs, a run and a stolen base. Tesmond went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run.
Softball splits doubleheader at UTM
MARTIN, Tenn. (EIU) — UT Martin snapped Eastern Illinois softball's 10-game win streak with a 4-3 win over the Panthers in game one of Friday's doubleheader. EIU rallied in Game 2, handing the Skyhawks a loss and beating them 5-2 to split the day's play. The Panthers improve to 28-9 overall and 7-1 in the OVC.
EIU's doubleheader at SIUE this Sunday has been canceled due to inclement weather, and a makeup date and times will be announced at a later time. The Panthers will return to action next weekend with a pair of conference doubleheaders versus Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State. The first pitch is set for Saturday, April 21, at 1 p.m. to start the weekend of play.
In game one, the Panthers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead over the Skyhawks. In the third inning, Mitchell doubled down the left field line, scoring Mady Poulter and Taylor Monahan. The Panthers tallied one more run in the top of the fourth inning to get them a three-run advantage.
UT Martin rallied in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring two runs on three hits. A sacrifice bunt brought in a run in the fourth to tie the game.The Skyhawks recorded three more hits in the sixth inning and scored one more run to hand the Panthers their first conference loss of the season.
In the second game, EIU recorded seven hits, led by Mia Davis, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with a team-best three RBIs.
UTM got on the board first with a run in the first inning, but the Panthers scored four runs off three hits in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. Mitchell doubled down the right field line, recording her two RBIs of the game as Kayla Bear and DeVito scored. Davis recorded her first hit of the game and two of her three RBIs, scoring Ashley Bartlett and Poulter.
The Panthers added another run in the top of the fifth inning to go up 5-1 over UTM. Davis grounded out to the second baseman but tallied her third RBI of the game as Bear scored. The Skyhawks managed to score one more run in the fifth, but ultimately fell to the Panthers 5-2.
Michelle Rogers improved to 13-3 on the mound and recorded three strikeouts in seven innings of work.
EIU women's tennis wins 6-1 on Senior Day
CHARLESTON (EIU) — After dodging morning thunderstorms in the area, Eastern Illinois and Southeast Missouri moved their Ohio Valley Conference match indoors to the Lantz Fieldhouse where the Panthers picked up a 6-1 win on Senior Day for EIU.
The Panthers' lone senior, Grace Summers, won the clinching point at No. 2 singles as she moved into a tie for career singles wins with her 55th all-time victory at EIU.
EIU improved to 11-12 overall, 5-3 in the OVC. SEMO dropped to 4-13 overall, 1-7 in the OVC. The Panthers' final regular season match will be played today at 12:30 p.m. against UT Martin at the Danville Tennis Center.
The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead, winning the doubles point with wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles. Stella Cliffe and Summers won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, while Emily Pugachevsky and Karla Contreras won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, EIU was able to extend its lead to 3-1 with wins by Cliffe and Shrishti Slaria in singles play. Cliffe won 6-1, 6-3 over Olexsandra Doroshenko at No. 1 singles. Slaria won 6-2, 6-2 over Alessandra Maya Thompson at No. 4 singles.
SEMO scored its lone point of the match with a win by Anais Emelie at No. 5 singles.
Summers then beat Kseniya Zonova at No. 2 singles in three sets to hand the Panthers the win. Summers' winning score was 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
EIU's final two points came at No. 3 and No. 6 singles. Claire Martin continued her strong spring season with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles. Rachel Papavasilopoulos won at No. 3 singles in three sets playing her first tennis since the first weekend of February. She won in three sets 6-7 (7-5), 7-5, 6-1.
