DANVILLE (EIU) — Eastern Illinois women’s tennis picked up its first win of the 2018 season as the Panthers swept Western Illinois 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Danville Tennis Center.
EIU won the doubles point with Grace Summers and Stella Cliffe winning at No. 1 doubles by a score of 6-2. Claire Martin and Srishti Slaria clinched the doubles point for the Panthers with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles.
The Panthers were able to win all six singles matches in straight sets. Emily Pugachevsky won at No. 4 singles by a count of 6-2, 6-1 over Cary Milanes.
Cliffe won at No. 2 singles over Courtney Lubbers by a score of 6-2, 6-2 while Slaria also posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles defeating Maria Bessmertnaya.
EIU men's tennis drops two
DAYTON, Ohio (EIU) — Dayton men’s tennis picked up a 4-0 win over Eastern Illinois on Sunday afternoon as the Panthers finished their two-match weekend trip to Dayton, Ohio. Saturday EIU fell to Wright State 6-1.
The Flyers won the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles Saturday. EIU’s No. 1 doubles team of Freddie O’Brien and Trent Reiman had their match left unfinished after Dayton won the point.
In singles action, Dayton won the three points it needed to lock up the victory, beating the Panthers in straight sets at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
The Panthers top three singles players had their matches left unfinished. Freshman Logan Charbonneau was tied at 3-3 in the second set with Carsten Fisher at No. 2 singles. Grant Reiman had a 2-1 lead in the second set of his match at No. 3 singles.
Against Wright State, Freddie O’Brien won his fourth straight match for the Panthers playing at No. 1 singles as he beat Michal Kianicka in three sets. O’Brien won 6-1, 3-6, 6-0. The sophomore was named the OVC Male Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday.
EIU fell to 1-5 on the season.
Track finishes strong at Notre Dame Meyo Invite
South Bend, Ind. (EIU) — The Eastern Illinois men's and women's indoor track and field teams finished strong in the final day of the Notre Dame Meyo Invite. The Panthers combined for eight top-15 finishes to close out the invite.
The highlight in the final day of action at the Meyo Invite was the quartet of Pedra Hicks, Darneisha Spann, Stephanie Dominguez, and Shirley Jones, which earned a spot in the EIU record books for the 4x400 meter relay. Their time of 3.51.03 moved the quartet into the tenth spot in the EIU record book for the relay.
The men's track and field team earned a total seven top-15 finishes on the day for the Panthers. Clayton Turner was the top finisher for the men, earning fifth place honors in the shot put with his distance of 53-05.00.
Ryan Pearce and Colton Yeakley also earned top-15 finishes for the Panthers in the shot put. Pearce claimed eighth with his throw of 51-09.00, and Yeakley grabbed 12th (50-06.00).
Davion McManis earned a sixth-place finish in the long jump with his distance of 23-04.50. Chrisford Stevens followed suit finishing behind McManis in seventh with his distance of 23-04.00. Joe Smith took twelfth in the long jump (22-04.25).
In the track events, Brandan Lane earned sixth place honors in the 60-meter dash, crossing the line at 6.93.
The EIU men's and women's indoor track and field teams will return to action next weekend at the Grand Valley State Big Meet. The Panthers will compete Friday in Allendale, Michigan.
