TAYLORVILLE --The Charleston girls' cross country team finished as the runner-up in the Apollo Conference meet Tuesday with 63 points, which was 26 behind Mahomet-Seymour.

On the boys' side Charleston was third with 75 points in the meet won by Mahomet-Seymour with 27. Mattoon was fifth with 132.

The rain held off during the races although it rained before and after the races. 

"The course was in good shape," said Mattoon coach Troy Haacke. "It was great competition, especially on the boys' side. There were some of the best runners in the state."


Mattoon's Quincy Collings was the top finisher between Mattoon and Charleston runners with a time of 19:14.09, good for third place. Jessica Franklin of Mahomet won the race with a time of 18:51.35. The Green Wave placed fourth overall with 84 points. 

Collings earned all-conference honors along with Kylie Haacke, who was sixth overall with a time of 19:50.97. A total of 68 runners competed.

Making the 10-member all-conference list for the Lady Trojans were Megan Garrett and Julia Griffin who were fourth and ninth respectively with times of 19:39.97 and 20:02.46 respectively.


Charleston's Nick Oakley was the top runner between Mattoon and Charleston runners, earning fifth place with a time of 15:37.08 out of 89 runners overall. 

Mahomet's Ryan Hodge was the individual winner with a time of 15:26.74. 

Oakley earned all-conference honors along with Austin Ames, who was eighth with a time of 16:15.45. 

Mattoon's Mitchell Kremer was all-Apollo with a seventh place finish in 15:58.97.

"The talent was unbelievable, " said coach Haacke. "Those three (Colllings, Kremer and Kylie Haacke) probably ran the best races of the year. They were in it from the beginning and competed like crazy to finish in the top 10. We had 11 boys all finish under the 20 minute mark."

Mattoon is to host the Class 2A Regional Oct. 21 at Lake Land College, while Charleston is to travel to Effingham for the Effingam St. Anthony Bulldog Classic Saturday at 9 a.m.

Mattoon falls in rain-shortened tennis match

MATTOON—In a meet shorted by rain, Effingham St. Anthony defeated Mattoon 6-0 in singles play on Senior Night.

Madi Freeman, the only senior on the Mattoon team, was honored at the meet.

Mattoon ends the season at 6-7 and is scheduled for action Friday and Saturday in the Effingham St. Anthony Class 1A Sectional.

JV loses

The ESA junior varsity beat Mattoon 5-1. Emily Stortzum won her singles match for the Green Wave.


Charleston falls to Effingham

EFFINGHAM—The Charleston volleyball team lost an Apollo Conference match to Effingham on Tuesday 25-18 and 25-13.

Mia Ruffolo led the Lady Trojans with 17 digs. Shae Littleford had four kills and Natalie Gordon earned 10 assists.

Charleston hosts Lincoln for another conference match Thursday.

Charleston drops Apollo Conference soccer game

MOUNT ZION -- The Charleston soccer team lost to Mount Zion 5-0 in an Apollo Conference match. 

Matthew Chaney had six saves for the Trojans, who are to play host to Mattoon Thursday in another Apollo contest.
